I Can’t Sleep – Please Help

Melatonin sold in pharmacies is considered a “natural” product because it is synthetically made to replicate the same hormone the body produces, and is typically derived from naturally occurring compounds rather than being a traditional pharmaceutical drug.

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland that helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, or internal sleep–wake cycle. In people with sleeping disorders—such as insomnia, delayed sleep phase disorder, or jet lag—this rhythm can become disrupted, leading to difficulty falling or staying asleep. Melatonin supplements work by signaling to the brain that it is time to rest, effectively mimicking the body’s natural nighttime rise in melatonin levels. This can help reset the sleep cycle, shorten the time it takes to fall asleep, and improve overall sleep quality.

One major factor contributing to insufficient sleep is elevated levels of cortisol, often referred to as the “stress hormone.” Cortisol is part of the body’s alertness system and typically peaks in the morning to promote wakefulness, then gradually declines throughout the day. However, chronic stress, anxiety, irregular schedules, or excessive screen exposure can cause cortisol levels to remain high at night. This disrupts the natural balance between cortisol and melatonin, making it harder for the body to transition into a restful state. Elevated cortisol essentially keeps the brain in a state of hyperarousal, interfering with the onset and depth of sleep.

Melatonin helps counteract this imbalance by promoting relaxation and reinforcing the body’s natural nighttime signals. While it does not directly “block” cortisol, it supports the circadian rhythm that normally suppresses cortisol production in the evening. By restoring a healthier rhythm, melatonin can indirectly reduce the impact of excess cortisol on sleep. Over time, consistent use—paired with good sleep hygiene—can help reestablish a more stable cycle in which cortisol decreases at night and melatonin rises appropriately, allowing for deeper and more restorative sleep.
