Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NLPHL) shares similarities to non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphomas (such as follicular lymphoma) than classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
This is because its cancer cells (called “popcorn cells”) closely resemble normal B-cells—the immune cells that make antibodies—and share similar markers (like CD20).
Unlike classic Hodgkin’s, which has unique, aggressive-looking Reed-Sternberg cells, NLPHL grows more slowly, often needs gentler treatments (like immunotherapy instead of heavy chemo), and can sometimes transform into a more aggressive B-cell lymphoma, much like other indolent B-cell cancers do. This biological similarity is why doctors sometimes treat NLPHL like a B-cell lymphoma rather than classic Hodgkin’s.
