Question:

Hello,what is the setting for Detrusor Failure (bladder muscle).  Does it come under Urination Disorders (page 117) or is there another setting.  Thank you, L. M.

Answer:

Retention  of  urine  may  be  acute  or  chronic,  and there are different underlying causes of inability to empty the bladder.

Acute retention of urine, or the sudden inability to void,  is  usually  associated  with  pain  and  severe  desire  to  void.  It  is  common  in  older  men  with  an  enlarged  prostate  but can occur in men and women of all ages.

Painless acute retention is associated with neu-rological conditions such as spinal cord compression or disc prolapse.  Chronic retention of urine is the chronic and long-standing inability to empty the bladder completely.

This is usually painless and often the patient is unaware that he or she is retaining urine.  Causes of retention of urine include:

Detrusor failure

Bladder outflow obstruction;

Neurological cause; A side-effect of drug therapy.
