Cytomegalovirus (CMV), or Human betaherpesvirus 5, is a prevalent double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Herpesviridae family and the Cytomegalovirus genus.
It is defined by its ability to cause infected cells to swell significantly and its capacity for lifelong latency within the host’s white blood cells after the initial infection. While it typically remains asymptomatic in healthy individuals, it is a primary concern for those with weakened immune systems and can cause serious birth defects if a mother is first infected during pregnancy.
