Hypotonia is decreased muscle tone, meaning muscles feel unusually floppy and offer less resistance to movement. It can make it difficult to sit, stand, walk, or maintain good posture, and may delay motor development. Hypotonia is a symptom rather than a disease and can result from problems in the brain, spinal cord, nerves, or muscles.
In leukodystrophy, damage to the brain’s white matter (myelin) disrupts communication between the brain and muscles. As a result, people with leukodystrophy may develop hypotonia, especially in the early stages of the disease. Over time, as the condition progresses, low muscle tone may change to increased muscle stiffness (spasticity). Hypotonia is therefore a common neurological feature of many leukodystrophies and contributes to difficulties with movement, balance, and everyday activities.
